Awantipora, named after King Avantivarman who ruled Kashmir from 855-883 CE, is home to two spectacular temple ruins dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Avantiswami Temple) and Lord Shiva (Avantiswara Temple). These 1100-year-old structures represent the finest examples of Kashmiri temple architecture from the medieval period. Built from locally quarried limestone, the temples showcase intricate carvings, elegant columns, and sophisticated architectural design. Though partially ruined due to earthquakes and time, the remaining structures still convey the grandeur of Kashmir's ancient Hindu heritage. The site is located on the banks of the Jhelum River in Pulwama district, about 30km from Srinagar. These ruins are protected monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India and offer a fascinating glimpse into Kashmir's pre-Islamic history.
